        In the imaging images of channel X-ray scanners, metal dangerous objects such as knives, sticks, and guns have obvious outlines and colors, which are easy to be identified; The imaging diagrams of flammable and explosive liquids, solid explosives and drugs are similar to common beverages, fertilizers, washing powder, milk powder, etc. in life. These are often difficult to identify effectively.

        In the 1990s, Invision company and L-3Comm of the United States developed X-ray-based computer tomography security inspection equipment, and successively passed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification, which officially opened X-ray-based computers Application of tomography technology in the field of security inspection. In December 2018, China’s national standard GB/T 37128-2018 "Technical Requirements for X-ray Computed Tomography Safety Inspection System" was officially released, which specified functions, performance, electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility and environmental adaptability from multiple perspectives Computed tomography equipment with X-rays. This makes the design, manufacture, acceptance and use of Computed Tomography (CT) scanner for security inspections well documented, and lays the foundation for the wide application of CT scanner for security inspections.

Compared with medical CT and industrial CT, the main features of security CT :

1) The types of objects to be inspected are complex, most of which are small in size, using low-energy X-ray sources;

2) Focus on imaging, while focusing on spatial resolution, image quality and density recognition;

3) In terms of structure, the scanning mode of the object to be inspected translation, x- ray genertor  and detector rotation is adopted, and the scanning speed is required to be high;

4) The system has intelligent analysis and alarm functions, supplemented by manual analysis.

Compared with traditional X-ray scanner, the main features of security CT:

1) No need to open the baggage  during inspection, realizing fast and three-dimensional imaging inspection of luggage;

2) Rich display content, can display the three-dimensional image of the detected object, can determine the thickness of the substance, and effectively identify hidden and overlapping objects;

3) Accurately calculate the density and effective atomic number of the detected substance, and identify explosives and drugs;

4) Accurately locate the position of explosives/narcotics in the luggage, reducing the influence of human factors;

5)  The rate of false negatives and false positives is extremely low.

        X-ray dual-energy CT imaging utilizes the different physical properties of the attenuation effect of substances on X-rays of different energies, collect two sets of CT data under different energies (spectrum), through special reconstruction methods, to obtain richer material distribution information than the traditional CT images obtained by single energy. On the one hand, dual-energy CT has special advantages for distinguishing substances with similar densities but different atomic numbers; on the other hand,  dual-energy CT can well solve the problem of different images of the same material and the same CT value of different materials caused by the multi-chromatogram of traditional CT.

        Dual-energy CT technology has been widely researched and applied in the field of security inspection.
