How does the x-ray machine work ?

To be easily, the machine has x-ray tank, can release x-ray beam. The beam penetrate the baggage, and received by the detectors on the other side. The detectors collected the xray signal and transfer to the computer, and the software will show it by a image. We can see the image on the monitor and know what is inside the bags.
