Sample molecules are first ionized by an ionization source, producing charged ions. These ions then enter an electric field where they migrate at different rates (i.e., mobility) due to their individual physical and chemical properties.
Detectors inside the migration tube monitor and record the arrival times of these ions in real time, generating a series of electrical signals. The intensity and arrival time of these electrical signals reflect the migration characteristics of the different ions.
Through further data processing and analysis of these electrical signals, we can draw an ion migration spectrum. This spectrum shows the distribution of different ions in terms of migration time, which helps us to identify the various substances present in the sample.
In short, Ion Mobility Spectrometry quickly and accurately identifies the type of substance in a sample by ionizing the sample, monitoring the migration of ions and analyzing the electrical signals.
